Blunder Panda

A chess training site with a personal coach built in.

You play real games against opponents set to your level, and a coach called Panda goes through each one with you. It explains its suggestions in plain English, stops the game when you blunder so you can find a better move, and turns your mistakes into puzzles for later. There are also lessons from famous games and openings to learn.

We'll email you once, when it opens. That's it. No newsletter, and we never share your address.

A chessboard. White has just moved a knight to g5, and an arrow shows the black queen on d8 can take it.
Panda Hold on, something just went wrong. Your knight on g5 can be taken by the queen on d8, and nothing defends it. Take the move back and find a safer square?

Coached games

Pick an opponent and start a game. Panda suggests a move and tells you why, then lets you play on your own for a while. If you blunder, the game pauses and you get hints until you find something better. You can take the move back and carry on.

Puzzles from your own mistakes

Every position you go wrong in is saved. It comes back as a puzzle a few days later, and again further apart each time, until you get it right without thinking. Each one ends with a question to ask yourself before a move like that.

The position from Tal against Portisch, Bled 1965, with White to move.

Tal against Portisch, 1965

White to move. Portisch's king is still in the middle of the board and his queen has wandered off to b6. Only the pawn on e6 stands in front of the king. What did Tal play?

Show Tal's move

16.Rxe6+. He gave a whole rook for a pawn to keep the black king stuck in the centre. A few moves later he won Portisch's queen, and then the game.

In the app you play the moves yourself, and Stockfish tells you what it thinks of them. It doesn't always agree with Tal.

Pick who tells you that you blundered

There's also a Savage mode for people who like being sworn at. It's off unless you turn it on.
